Bucko Jam 2024 (release)


I made this quick game for the Bucko Jam 2024 host by Amiya Aranha (the jam itself does not have an Itch page). Used Game Maker 8.0 because I'm most familiar with it and thus have a quick workflow.

Played the original Umihara Kawase (SNES, 1994) via the official Steam release for reference on the fish hook and physics. Though the fish hook implementation went smoothly, the "walking around like a normal person" coding was a nightmare because it worked well until I wanted slopes. I was so stumped that I had to watch some tutorials from 12 years ago! After making the stolen movement code work, I adapted it to be compatible with the player's momentum.

Started 28th June 2024, finished at the last minute. That's right, I did this 2-month long jam like it was a super short 72-hour jam like Ludum Dare would be. Somehow squeezed in some audio trimming and doodles before compiling at 00:10am BST on 1st July (technically still June 30th for Ami).
